SEL is an innovative engineering firm offering fire and safety related consulting, investigation, testing and research services. We provide a wide range of fire science, forensic investigation, engineering and safety services for diverse clients on the road and at our laboratory and testing facilities in Warren and Yale, Michigan. While we provide engineering and fire investigation services nationwide, we also provide industrial CT scanning locally in the metro Detroit area.

As a fire investigation company, we stand by the fact that Industrial CT scanning is a valuable tool for the examination of internal damage to electronic devices, power supplies, and mechanical devices without resorting to destructive examination. In-house industrial CT scanning can be performed on items up to.5 meters in size, including personal electronic devices, power tools, valves, automotive components, and any other item when a precise internal inspection would prove valuable.

This means that discovering issues within products, whether they are field returns, artifacts from a fire, or new products being assessed for potential risks, can be performed without damaging or destroying the product.
Services
SEL's engineering and investigative staff provide a full range of forensic services and expert testimony.
Don has been with SEL since 1988 and is now the President and a Senior Scientist.
He leads the engineering analysis of fires and explosions, conducts testing and analysis of products and materials, oversees process safety projects and provides expert testimony.
Since 1986 when he founded SEL, John has investigated and analyzed hundreds of fires and explosions and has provided expert testimony throughout the United States, U.S. Territories and Canada.
SEL's Warren, Michigan facility has both a laboratory and a large space for the examination, analysis and testing of products and systems.
Video systems are available to provide a permanent record of examinations and inspections if requested.
Our laboratory provides space for examination and inspection of artifacts and has a wide range of optical and electronic microscopy, FTIR analysis, digital x-ray and CT scanning capabilities.
For more information, please see Testing and Analytical Services.
SEL's CT Scanner has a 225 kv x-ray source and a 127 micron Varian detector, allowing for excellent image resolution as low as single digit microns.
The CT Scanner provides high quality imagery showing detailed internal characteristics of devices and components for non-destructive examination.
CT Scanning is increasingly valuable in the forensic examination of personal electronics, batteries and fire damaged artifacts, but is also key in many industrial inspection situations.
The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is a key investigative and analysis tool.
For clients who wish to simulate the an event, SEL's Yale, Michigan facility features a controlled environment test bay capable of accommodating complete test items and amply space for the construction of custom test structures.
State-of-the-art video and digital photography systems are available to provide a permanent record.
SEL also has a portable X-ray system capable of producing digital radiographs of fire scene artifacts and non-fire related items.
Safety Engineering Laboratories offers clients in Sterling Heights, Michigan industrial CT scanning to help you develop hazard-free products and designs no matter what your trade may be.
Industrial CT scanning facilitates better product development and machine optimization through the detailed data we collect from the CT scans.
Once we process all the information, we can create graphics and animations to give you a better idea of where anomalies are/might be occurring and how to revise a product's design to address any hazards.
