We are a leading innovator of pixel-based sensors and displays with extensive expertise in integrated circuit based readout of IR, visible, and X-Ray detectors, and camera integration (including micro and nano sized IR camera design). We design, test, and provide consulting services for nonstandard ICs that are essential for systems to meet the requirements of our customers.
Our broad and extensive experience make us a good fit for a multitude of applications, and above all we enjoy providing successful solutions to the most difficult problems. We work with several U.S. departments and military contractors so we are registered with the DDTC and are compliant with the rules and regulations set forth by the ITAR and EAR controls.
We have also designed micro and nano sized IR camera modules. We designed CMOS imagers long before they were a ubiquitous part of our everyday lives and we continue to innovate. IC control of LCD and Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) provide fascinating possibilities for countless applications including micro-fluidics and light modulation (displays).

Black Forest Engineering was founded in 1990 by Steve Gaalema.
Named after the forest just north of Colorado Springs where it was originally located, BFE has enjoyed steady growth over the years by consistently providing realistic and capable designs to accomplish client goals.
BFE's diverse and extensive design expertise along with industry standard verification tools facilitates designing solutions to the often non-standard requirements of its customers.
Steve Gaalema received his Ph.
D. in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1976, where he demonstrated the first acoustic charge transport device.
