Commissioning is often thrown around on construction projects these days.
Many use this term but do not really have an understanding of what it means or what is involved.

Fact 1: Commissioning is a Professional Service just like Engineering and Architecture.
Similar to Engineering, Commissioning must be led by a Design Professional.
This means Contractors, by definition, cannot provide commissioning services.
They can, however, provide their normal unit start up and check out, which is what they typically call commissioning anyway.
Fact 2: For Public Clients, Commissioning should be procured in the same manner as Professional Engineering, through qualifications and negotiation of scope and fee.

At HCE our default Design is High Performance.
Many of our Owners are lifetime building owners.
HCE always designs MEP systems with the several things in mind.
Lifecycle cost, total cost, maintenance cost, energy efficiency, and architectural/owner driven goals.
We routinely evaluate materials and equipment to see if up front cost is justified in the long term energy efficiency and durability of the building.
That's really what it's all about.
We not only call that GREEN, we call it GOOD design, or at our office EVERYDAY.
