Macawber Engineering
Macawber Engineering, Inc. specializes in the design and engineering of low velocity, dense phase pneumatic conveying and bulk handling processes. True to our core business for over 40 years with thousands of installations, we offer long term, reliable and efficient solutions to process industries worldwide. Dense phase pneumatic conveying is the high pressure (>15psi), low velocity (2-15 feet/sec) transfer of dry, bulk materials.

Material is gently conveyed using compressed gas or nitrogen through the convey pipe in a continuous dense phase, short slug, or bed flow below the saltation velocity which is where the material is lifted into the airstream. Macawber Engineering differentiates itself from the market by the simplicity and highly reliable performance of its systems.

The Dome Valve, our robust filling valve, originally developed and patented (US patent 4,137,935 | 5,642,751) by us, is an integral part of our material transfer philosophy. Due to its unique design, we are able to control conveying regimes reliably and use small pressure vessels.
Services
Since its establishment in the 70s Macawber Engineering, Inc. has focused on dense phase pneumatic conveying.
It has been a pioneer, an innovator, an educator and most of all a solution provider assisting customers worldwide to convey, often difficult to handle materials, reliably and efficiently.
Our story began in Doncaster, UK in the early 70s with two driven businessmen, Michael F. Crawley and Brian Snowdon, both with innovative minds and determined to make a mark and improve the existing methods of conveying which at the time were unreliable and particularly unsuitable for conveying abrasive material.
Our innovative approach to pneumatic conveying, developed in the 1970s, enabled the industry to move from dilute phase systems to dense phase system.
Our philosophy is to provide expertise to design and manufacture systems that are simple and reliable.
This concept has transformed not only pneumatic conveying, but also our customers' material handling capabilities and continues to be recognized as a proven and tested approach to low velocity, dense phase pneumatic conveying.
Our passion for science and understanding how to best convey materials, especially those that are difficult to handle, has been critical to our success.
Our focus for decades has been to become an expert in dense phase pneumatic conveying, to understand processes and flow characteristics of materials, design high quality systems and offer our customers long term solutions and value.
Today we are known for our expertise in conveying materials of all kinds with unique capabilities to handle difficult to convey materials.
Many materials such as fragile, abrasive, damp, lumpy or hot cannot be handled efficiently by dilute phase systems or cleanly by mechanical type systems.
Material is conveyed below the saltation velocity in a moving bed flow pattern (rolling or plowing).
Velocities are 10-25 ft/sec at the feed end, and 40-70 ft/sec at the terminal end.
Continuous dense phase is used to handling powders that may be easily fluidized and are able to retain air.
Material is conveyed below the saltation velocity in a slug-type flow pattern, i.e., a slug or series of slugs separated by air gaps are conveyed along the pipe.
The slugs completely fill the full cross section of the pipe.
The process of biomass conversion for fuel presents unique challenges for utilities and industries.
For instance, the ash produced by burning organic materials, such as grains, wood, ground plant material and corn produce ash that is lighter than coal and as such, requires expertise to convey successfully.
Macawber has been in the forefront of designs that are able to respond not just to challenges related to handling biomass but also produce equipment that is a natural fit with green, environmentally responsible approach.
