Due to the demand on South Florida's most congested Interstate, FDOT presented this "first of a kind" Express Lane concept via the USDOT Urban Partnership Agreement and obtained funding to implement the first phase of this monumental project.
The project included 2 phases of the Express Lanes from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, spanning 21 miles.
The project includes the HOT conversion plus 2 New Express Lanes.
The Express Lanes were constructed to be operated with dynamically priced toll signs and ITS devices to be monitored from the Traffic Management Center.

This Project consisted of the reconstruction of a major bascule bridge over Indian Creek in Miami Beach, which provides a major thoroughfare for traffic coming from the City of Miami mainland accessing the City of Surfside, Village of Bal Harbour, and Sunny Isles.
The bridge was maintained operable during construction to prevent impact to commercial and pleasure crafts; close coordination with the US Coastguard was required.
This major bridge replacement project included the replacement of 12 water mains installed using open cut and subaqueous horizontal directional bore methods.

This 1622 Calendar Day Project provided improvements to the mainline such as roadway widening and reconstruction, milling and resurfacing, and slope correction.
Bridge widening took place utilizing several foundation methods including both steel (pipe and H) and concrete piling.
The superstructures required the new AASHTO beams to match existing conditions.
The Project included a series of major temporary critical walls with sheet piling and wire basket construction to implement new MSE walls; permanent steel sheet pile walls to reinforce existing ramps; installation of precast sound barrier wall panels using auger cast foundations (20'avg height); and variable height concrete barrier wall & opaque visual barrier.
