What you want is a firm that has experience, industry knowledge, and, of course, innovative ideas. It also wouldn't hurt if the firm had a track record of delivering projects in a timely manner, and had the respect of the Contractors doing the actual work in the field.

Founded in 1983, Szekely Engineering is a one-person full service shop providing personalized service in Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering, providing services ranging from investigation and reports to design and engineering, from project schematics through completion of construction, including extensive shop drawing review and supervision of system commissioning.

Familiarity with, and reliance upon, state of the art software (much of which has been developed in-house) provides Szekely Engineering with a force multiplier which has allowed it to complete several dozen projects and assignments in a year, each in less time and of higher quality than the average shop with a half dozen or more employees.
Services
Here we describe the breadth and depth of engineering services offered, as well as advantages provided, many of which are simply not available from more conventional MEP engineering firms.
We do between 30 and 50 projects per year, but since we take care not to take on projects whose milestones look as though they might become concurrent with ongoing projects, we rarely (as in almost never) ask for deadline extensions.
While, as a small (as in one person) shop, we (I) don't do complete skyscrapers or industrial plants, you'll never have to wait for an answer while I ask someone else.
In private practice for over a quarter-century, Tom Szkely has had broad and deep exposure in many styles engineering practice in his nearly two decades of experience prior to the formation of Szkely Engineering.
That is, the industrial experience described below was of a level of detail rarely seen in commercial work, and is one of the things which led him to develop Szkely Engineering's "field coordination drawing" style of presenting MEP work, sort of a composite two-dimensional model of the mechanical-electrical-plumbing trades' work on project.
