Humiston & Moore Engineers was established in 1991 to specialize in civil engineering projects within the dynamic coastal zone. H&M works with coastal communities, governmental agencies, and private property owners, offering services that include beach nourishment and other alternatives to erosion control, inlet and navigation channel maintenance, marina design, Coastal Construction Control Line permitting, and FEMA flood zone mapping.

Our Engineers employ state-of-the-art technical and modeling tools combined with years of hands-on experience with coastal construction to develop practical applied solutions. H&M has developed unique solutions that have successfully solved problems under challenging site conditions where there were either natural resource or regulatory constraints.

Our philosophy is that fully understanding the complex processes that cause erosion is essential to designing successful projects, it is also the key to designing projects that will effectively restore natural coastal systems.
Services
Humiston & Moore Engineers (H&M) is a civil engineering consulting firm founded in 1991 by Kenneth K. Humiston, P.E., and Brett D. Moore, P.E., to provide specialized services in the field of coastal engineering.
H&M has been providing these specialized services for over 20 years, although the two principals have been providing such services with a combined career experience of over 60 years.
H&M has completed a wide variety of coastal engineering projects including beach restoration, beach and inlet management studies and implementation, inlet dredging, spoil disposal, beach and inlet coastal morphology studies, FEMA map evaluations and LOMR studies, navigation projects, emergency storm response, and more.
The most cost-effective way to approach a coastal engineering problem is to first establish a thorough understanding of the dynamic processes that have caused the problem.
Developing this level of understanding of those processes is necessary for the development of effective design criteria to solve the problem.
H&M has a strong technical background in the specialized field of coastal engineering, both from an academic perspective and in terms of practical applied experience including data collection, design, permitting, cost estimating, and construction management and observation.
The causes of erosion must be understood in order to proceed with design of a beach fill project.
Erosion analysis provides information that can be used by the project sponsor to set project goals and objectives, and it provides the H&M Engineers with technical information to establish design criteria.
The economics of beach nourishment is, to a significant extent, determined by the availability of a suitable sand source.
H&M Engineers search for offshore sand sources from which sand can be delivered to the project area by hydraulic dredge.
Project Management includes many elements.
H&M professionals and administrative staff provide guidance from early conceptual planning stages, coordination through regulatory processes, all necessary technical services for design, assistance with the bidding process to select qualified contractors, construction phase professional services, and follow-up monitoring to document project success and provide baseline data for planning of future maintenance.
Careful planning during development of conceptual approach is essential to project success.
The State of Florida has gone through the transition of the FEMA remapping process over the recent years, which has allowed H&M to gain experience and understanding of the complexities associated with FEMA Flood Maps along coastal barrier islands.
This experience and knowledge allows H&M to provide a variety of approaches to solve complex problems in a cost-effective manner.
H&M's strong technical background in the specialized field of coastal engineering, both from an academic perspective and in terms of practical applied experience (data collection, design, permitting, and cost estimation) provides a comprehensive and complete approach to address technical challenges.
