To take action, with seed funding from a coalition of federal agencies, to broaden the participation of women and historically underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Deep understanding of the urgency and complexity of the inclusiveness challenge as a result of 15 years of experience working with STEM stakeholders at the national and community levels. Deliverables provided to the House Science Committee, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Ewing Kaufmann Foundation, the San Diego Foundation, the U.S. Army, the Office of Naval Research, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

A portfolio that encompasses the design, development, maintenance of websites, videos, and YouTube channels, as well as the production of research-based messaging, and wide-ranging collateral materials. Conceptualization and implementation of a three-year Department of Defense STEM Diversity Campaign whose components included community engagement, communications, and evaluation.
Services
A coalition of seven federal agencies provided seed funding in 2001 to launch BEST, a non-profit organization, to broaden the participation of women and historically under-represented minorities in STEM.
Following the submission of three reports to Congress on the nation's most effective STEM diversity programs, the Office of the Secretary of Defense selected BEST in 2005 as its principal contractor support for developing a K-12 portfolio of STEM outreach activities.
BEST was awarded more than $35 million in grants from 2006 through 2018 to support the National Defense Education Program (NDEP) in the areas of strategic planning, management of external partnerships, community engagement, DoD laboratory outreach, communications, and evaluation.
John Yochelson, president, brings to his leadership position a wide range of high-level policy experience including the presidency of the U.S. Council on Competitiveness, an appointment to the President's Export Council, and membership on the management team of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Mr. Yochelson has been responsible for the development of BEST's virtual business model, the core team selection, the national search for effective STEM programs, the interface with DoD management and leadership, and the management of relationships with national non-profit partners and other stakeholders.
The Department of Defense established the Defense STEM Education Consortium (DSEC) in 2019 as a collaborative partnership between academia, industry, not-for-profit organizations, and government that aims to broaden STEM literacy and develop a diverse and agile workforce to power the United States' innovative defense infrastructure.
BEST has cultivated vibrant communications products to raise the awareness about the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and specifically the cutting-edge career opportunities with the U.S. Department of Defense.
This experience includes conceptualizing and producing special events, films, websites, branding, collateral development, market research and evaluation.
LabTV is a series of three-minute films showcasing exciting and cutting-edge research happening in our nation's defense labs.
