KARESH ENVIRONMENTAL is a full service environmental consulting & engineering firm established in 1983 in South Carolina. We work primarily with industries and concentrate on helping them comply with environmental regulations in a cost effective manner. This includes work with air emissions, air modeling, hazardous waste, wastewater, groundwater remediation, drinking water, solid waste, CERCLA, and SARA compliance.

The scope of these projects ranges from studies & reports to permit applications to design of treatment systems. We enjoy good working relationships with all of DHEC's environmental branches. We work on repeat assignments for most clients and also have been called on by several other engineering firms for help with special problems. In addition to typical engineering projects (i.e., design projects), we work with several clients on a continuing basis to oversee all of their environmental compliance activities.

We view our job as two fold - [1] to help keep clients in compliance with environmental laws, and [2] to make sure that compliance is achieved in the most cost effective manner possible.
Services
A typical construction project includes reviewing the plans and equipment specifications for a new equipment installation, estimating emissions from the new source, determining applicable regulatory requirements, air modeling, and preparation & submittal of the permit application.
Air modeling is either performed as part of a construction permit application or sometimes for the renewal of an operating permit.
Simple sources can often be modeled quickly using the SCREEN3 model.
Complex sources with multiple emission points may be modeled more effectively with a "refined" model (either ISCST3 or AERMOD).
Our activities in the wastewater field are directed at developing cost effective and reliable solutions to your wastewater problems.
This can take the form of optimizing existing treatment systems or developing new treatment techniques for specific wastes.
One recent project was to upgrade a large biological treatment system to handle a raw waste with a high BOD (> 10,000 mg/l BOD).
Another recent project was assisting an industry with a small physical-chemical pretreatment plant to increase the reliability of the system so that "disturbances" were not seen in the local municipal system.
Our experience includes designing landfill additions and evaluating disposal options for solid waste handling.
For example, one project looked at a land application alternative for a low nutrient semi-solid industrial waste that had been landfilled for over 15 years.
Another project looked at growing an agricultural crop from a discarded waste stream.
We have also designed groundwater monitoring networks for landfills.
Other projects have been for groundwater collection and treatment systems.
In one project, we replaced five individual well pumps in a collection network with a single vacuum ejector pump.
These audits are often done for new clients to determine the compliance status of a facility.
We typically look at all environmental areas - wastewater, air, solid waste, hazardous waste, CERCLA, groundwater, stormwater, etc. to determine if a facility is meeting the state and federal requirements.
A comprehensive report is prepared outlining the findings and recommending action as appropriate.
We review these assessments (performed by others) to provide a second opinion as to the meaning and importance of the findings.
